Cascadia International Women's Film Festival Closing Event: "The Dumb Girl of Portici" Silent Film Feature @ Mount Baker Theatre | Bellingham | Washington | United States

The closing event of CASCADIA International Women’s Film Festival presented at the Mount Baker Theatre features a recently restored silent film not seen in more than a century made by Lois Weber, the highest-paid director working in Hollywood during the silent-film era and into the 1920s. “The Dumb Girl of Portici” was the first blockbuster film directed by a woman. This brilliant, restored 1916 film — with the dazzling new score by dance composer John Sweeney — will give today’s audiences a chance to experience the energy, the expressive face, and the grace of the great ballet dancer and choreographer Anna Pavlova. CASCADIA International Women’s Film Festival Fundraiser: “Megan Leavey” @ Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistros - The Roost
Sep 9 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
CASCADIA International Women's Film Festival Fundraiser: "Megan Leavey" @ Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistros - The Roost | Bellingham | Washington | United States

CASCADIA International Women’s Film Festival will present a special outdoor screening of the film “Megan Leavey” at Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistros – The Roost, on September 9 beginning at 8:00 p.m. The event is intended to help raise both funds and awareness for the CASCADIA film festival as well as showcase a sensitive, uplifting film made by a woman about an outstanding woman.

About the Film: “Megan Leavey” is based on the true story of Marine Corporal Megan Leavey whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog, an aggressive German shepherd Rex, saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex completed more than 100 missions until an IED explosion injures them, putting their fate in jeopardy. For their dedication and heroism, they received the Purple Heart.

The film was directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) from a screenplay by Pamela Gray, Annie Mumolo and Tim Lovestedt. It stars Kate Mara, Edie Falco, Ramón Rodríguez, Bradley Whitford and Common.

“Megan Leavey” is a wonderful, warm film about the special relationship and loyalty between a soldier and her military combat dog. as well as the story of a woman in an unconventional role. It demonstrates the training that both undergo prior to being sent into combat zones. In addition, the crew on the film was largely made up of women.

Admission is just $10. As a thank you for their service, active duty military and veterans with valid military I.D. will receive free admission.

The event is generously sponsored by Barbara Vz Howard, whose partner was a U.S. Marine pilot in the Vietnam War. They are supporters of “Keeping K-9s in Kevlar.” K-9 Officer Deputy Jason Nyhus and K-9 Hyde of Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department will be on-hand after the film for a short presentation and to answer audience questions about this harrowing work. Keeping K-9s in Kevlar is a Bellingham-based nonprofit that purchases Kevlar vests for law enforcement dogs in need. Each vest that is donated honors a fallen officer.

In addition, Boundary Bay Brewery is generously donating The Roost and projection equipment for the evening’s event.

North Bend Film Festival @ North Bend Theatre

The North Bend Film Festival is emerging from the fog with a hybrid 2021 festival taking place July 15-18, 2021. The in-person portion of the fest returns audience members to the historic art deco North Bend Theatre for a limited amount of feature film and short screenings to complement a robust virtual lineup of screenings, talkbacks, and immersive experiences. The majority of film selections will be exclusive to physical or virtual with only a few overlaps making for a unique festival experience however you choose to attend.

New to the festival is the Dulac Vanguard Filmmaker Award meant to honor an extraordinary achievement in groundbreaking filmmaking with a director’s first or sophomore film. This year’s recipient is Jane Schoenbrun for their debut film “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” a beautifully haunting work that captures with surreal relevance the dual sadness and hope of life lived through a screen.

Continuing the festival’s mission to present groundbreaking immersive events, this year will feature a tongue-in-cheek pregnancy mystery party with I Swing, You Swing, a self-led storytelling experience that will take place across North Bend with Marcia Needs Space and the in-person return of fest favorite Strange Storytelling Hour, which will be recorded in front of a live audience and offered online for virtual viewing after.

North Bend Film Fest virtual programming is geo-restricted to the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, and Idaho) with two types of festival passes currently on sale: a 10 feature or shorts program package for $95 and a 12 feature or shorts program package for Industry Members also priced at $95. All event programming will be free to pass holders. Individual ticket options also include a $3 discount for locals attending in-person screenings.

To buy a pass, visit bit.ly/nbffpass, or view our complete lineup here bit.ly/nbfffilmguide!
