Join the pre-party festivities (at 11:30 a.m.) in celebration of the Co-op’s completed downtown improvement projects. We’ll celebrate and then parade down Holly Street in grand fashion from the Downtown store parking lot to Maritime Heritage Park.
This year we are especially pleased to welcome The New Old Time Chautauqua—a perennial crowd favorite and America’s only traveling Chautauqua—back to the party.
Chautauquas are based on the idea that learning continues throughout life. The Chautauqua Movement began in 1874, bringing a mix of education and entertainment to communities throughout the nation. When a Chautauqua came to town, all normal activity stopped while citizens dedicated a week of their lives to learn, be entertained and join with their community.
The Flying Karamazov Brothers will headline the variety show, along with The New Old Time Chautauqua! After the show, members from the troupe will host circus arts workshops.
Local up-and-coming talent in the Bellingham Youth Jazz Summer Band opens the party at high noon, and powerhouse old-school rock-and-roller Jasmine Green will close it down from 3:30 to 5 p.m.!

The Ferndale Street Festival is in it’s 13th year and we are extremely proud to have claimed the title of 2011, 2012 and 2015 “Ferndale’s Best Community Event.” This year’s MUSIC is top of the line with a mix of Whatcom County’s most talented band and the Festival doesn’t end there. With an entire block dedicated to the family and kids with their own Live Stage acts, a car show, various food outlets, vendors of all trades and a wine & beer tent, there is almost not enough time to take it all in!
With something happening every where you turn you can come and go as you please and never see the same thing twice so plan to spend the entire day and take in everything downtown Ferndale has to offer. There will be several outdoor seating venues for the over 21 crowd at local restaurants and plenty of sales with the local retail stores. So rain or shine, it’s all happening on Main Street where we shut it all down from traffic and have ourselves a fantastic time!

This year for Kid’s Art Walk, Make.Shift Gallery has partnered with Art Peace School to present “Thwack! Bam! Pow!” a showcase of art inspired by superheroes and villains. Art Peace Students, ranging from grades 3 through 7, provided Make.Shift with artistic renderings of superheroes and villains from their imagination. Then, artists from the community provided recreations and responses to these works. Artworks span a variety of mediums from painting to collage to sculpture. The First Friday opening will also feature creative activities hosted by Play Lab and musical performances by youth bands from Girls Rock Camp. Capes and costumes are encouraged!
Pickford Film Center is excited for the fun to continue with Kid Pickford, a monthly family-friendly film series for kids at the Pickford for $1. Formally named Pickford Family Matinees, this series shows a classic family film each month on Saturdays at 1 pm. From an epic children’s quest spanning 50 years, rousing debates for the history books, some mysterious mythical cursed rabbits, gifted aspiring ballet stars, a quest to secure a stolen book, and a special winter in Moomin Valley, this year’s Kid Pickford slate is full of excitement and a joy to watch!
No matter if you’re 30 and want to see a classic favorite childhood film, have kids, want to host a birthday party, or simply want a relaxed and enjoyable Saturday afternoon, Kid Pickford is always a lot of fun. Bring your kids, bring friends or a date, and catch a classic Saturday afternoon movie.
Next up is Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) which is stop motion animated film following eccentric inventor Wallace (voice of Peter Sallis) and his faithful if often perplexed dog Gromit are back in their first feature-length adventure from animator Nick Park. Wallace and Gromit have launched a new business venture just in time for a major gardening competition in their neighborhood of West Wallaby. “Anti-Pesto” is a humane pest-relocation service in which Wallace and Gromit capture rabbits and other critters who have been eating the produce from local gardens and give them new homes somewhere else. Business has been going well, and when the woman hosting the garden show, Lady Tottington (voice of Helena Bonham Carter), discovers a massive tribe of rabbits has been making a mess of her garden, she calls in Wallace and Gromit to move the bunnies elsewhere… with disastrous results..
