“If you treat mushrooms with discrimination and respect, you can learn to pick your own edible wild mushrooms without fear of confusing them with poisonous types — mushrooms which are nutritious, far more flavorful than the mass-produced cultivated variety, and best of all, free! It does, however, require time and effort — a willingness to plunge into the woods, to uncover their secrets, to learn their characteristics, to penetrate their haunts.”
-David Arora, author of Mushrooms Demystified

The Northwest Mushroomers Association promotes the understanding and appreciation of mushrooms and the study of mycology in Whatcom, Skagit, and Island counties. Yearlong NMA membership is $15 for families and $10 for students. Join us! northwestmushroomers.org

Workshop: Salmon on the Nooksack @ Glacier Public Service Center

Workshop: Salmon on the Nooksack @ Glacier Public Service Center | Deming | Washington | United States

Each year, Northwest rivers teem with life and death as salmon return to their home waters to complete their life journey. As Puget Sound’s northernmost and fourth-largest watershed, the Nooksack River Basin is home to salmonid species both thriving and struggling.

Join us as we step into waders and slip into the cool waters of the Nooksack River to explore its salmon-rich waters with aquatic biologist Brady Green. Together we will keep our eyes peeled for salmon and their redds as we learn about the fish species that call this watershed home.

Brady will describe the unique characteristics of the forks of the Nooksack River, the salmon’s interconnectedness to dynamic natural systems and how impacts to the greater and local landscape have altered the fish’s status.

We will meet at the Glacier Public Service Center on Highway 542 before heading to various locations along the Nooksack River including the Boyd Creek Interpretive Trail and the Old Nooksack Campground.

Boots and waders will be available to borrow if you don’t have them.

Human Minds in Natural Spaces, Aesthetics and Perception - ONLINE @ ONLINE

What can one say of the prospect of the future in a world where increasing injury to the planet is a symptom of human psychopathology?

Through readings and discussions, participants will have an opportunity to recapitulate and then chart new ways of rethinking their own place on natural spaces in more integral and thus inclusive ways; eyes wide open!

This class is being taught by Dr. George Conesa, an interdisciplinary thinker with an academic and professional background in biology, philosophy, and experimental psychology. Dr. Conesa edits the International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE) at CAL POLY Humboldt and has taught courses on animal behavior and cognition, in addition to many other pursuits.
