Make.Shift April Artwalk- Capturing Community on the Road with Photography by Marilyn Montufar @ Make.Shift Art Space
Apr 7 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Make.Shift April Artwalk- Capturing Community on the Road with Photography by Marilyn Montufar @ Make.Shift Art Space | Stockton | California | United States

For the First Friday Art Walk Make.Shift Gallery presents “Capturing Community on the Road: Photography by Marilyn Montufar.” Marilyn Montufar was born in Los Angeles, CA and received her B.F.A in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. She currently teaches photography to urban youth and is a program assistant for a teen art studio in Seattle. Her work explores the transitions inherent in gentrification and human relationships through a practice of portraiture and an exploration of the evolving urban and natural landscape.

“Capturing Community on the Road” is an ongoing photo essay with an emphasis on sharing stories about individuals who are underrepresented in mainstream culture and the arts. The exhibit consists of photographs from 2016 when Montufar traveled and photographed in various cities in the U.S. and throughout the Mexican Border to Juarez, Mexico by car for two months. She photographed in the outskirts of major metropolitan cities, such as Compton in Los Angeles, California, to capture the lives and essences of underserved and underrepresented communities, like youth, women and immigrants. This project was supported in part from a grant from Artists Up.

Artist’s Reception for Andy Friedlander @ BelleWood Acres
May 14 @ 11:00 am – 2:00 pm
Artist's Reception for Andy Friedlander @ BelleWood Acres | Lynden | Washington | United States

There will be a reception for local artist Andy Friedlander in the Art Gallery at BelleWood Acres on Sunday May 14 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Andy Friedlander was born and raised in New York City. He and his family have called the Skagit Valley home since 1964.

Andy studied painting, theatre and music at Earlham College and found his medium in the theatre. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama, he had a successful 45 year career in the professional and educational theatre – the last 26 years as Director the Skagit Valley College Drama Program.Upon retirement from the college, Andy devoted himself to painting. First, creating abstract works in acrylics followed by more realistic/impressionistic work in oils.

At the core of his work is the fundamental interaction of color and shape, taught to him by his first acting teacher, Mitsuo Kakutani, a Japanese landscape artist and abstract painter. This teaching leads to an impressionistic use of color and a free form approach to realism. Andy draws inspiration from the Northwest landscape and its inhabitants. He currently studies with Colleen Hoffenbacker, a professional artist living in Bellingham.

Andy began taking photographs to provide subjects for painting. Realizing that the camera could capture elements of detail not possible in a painting, he began using the camera to capture close-up and complex images in nature – primarily flowers. Most fascinating is the inside of the flower, which seems to pop out to the viewer with sufficient backlighting.
Andy’s passion for music finds an outlet with the Prozac Mtn. Boys. Together for the last 20 years, they are an active bluegrass band that has played at Bellewood Acres many times.
Andy’s photos and paintings will be on display in our Art Gallery for May and June.
