The four one-act plays presented explore many topics faced by youth today, including peer pressure, bullying, sadness, and the desire to be understood and accepted. Throughout their month-long rehearsal process, the performers experienced in-depth acting training and ensemble building along with input the playwright. Matilda is the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her destiny. Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, produced as a film adaptation in 1996, is a bright new Tony-award winning Broadway musical. Witness the magic at Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth this May-June! Over four weekends of performances, four different casts of BAAY students will take the stage for Matilda. These junior and senior performers ages 9-16 join together to tell the story of a young girl gifted with strange powers. Matilda the Musical celebrates the love of reading and learning, the wonder of childhood, and the great power of young people. Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth proudly presents Under the Bed. This is the first work produced by Company Z, BAAY’s current student-led play devising ensemble. Theatre devising is an experimental and collaborative art-making process. These young artists ages 13-17 have been crafting their story since the start of 2021. From the page to the stage, see their vision come to life in Company Z’s Under the Bed.

Saturdays, April 9 – May 28; 10:30am-12pm; Ages 9 – 12

In this 8 week class, we will cover all the basics of theater acting including elements of movement & space, character development, objectives and tactics, using the voice, staging a scene, and more!

Great for beginners and young theater enthusiasts who want a solid foundation in theater (we will not be producing a show). This class will build self confidence, enhance collaborative skills, and inspire tons of creativity and fun.

We require all participants in this class to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and stay masked while at the Sylvia Center. We will check vaccination status at the first class.
