Legacy Washington will be honoring Joe Moser for his service flying a fighter plane in WWII. After bailing out of his plane over France, Joe was held captive in the Buchenwald concentration camp for more than eight months and then freed within days of his rumored execution. Members of Joe’s family will be present to speak about this beloved Ferndale community icon. Legacy Washington is a program within the Office of the Secretary of State dedicated to documenting history and sharing lessons from the lives of extraordinary Washingtonians. All are welcome!

Join us for this special program with Holocaust survivor and author, Noemi Ban. Learn about her family’s time in occupied Hungary, and later the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Noemi Ban is the winner of the Golden Apple award and a public speaker in Whatcom County.

Local author, Susan Lynn Sloan, will present some of the lessons that she learned from writing the story of Fred Fragner, a Holocaust survivor who lived out the last years of his life in Bellingham. In his twenties, Fred was shot, captured and tortured by the Nazis and sent to Buchenwald Concentration Camp for five years. After the war, he served as principal of one of the United Nations centers for orphaned children of WWII. Fred was able to take what he learned and created a wonderful life for himself and those who knew him. Come and learn about Fred’s greatest life lesson, to respect one another.
