Since its inception in 2017, CASCADIA has presented the films of over 220 women directors, one of the few festivals in the U.S. dedicated to the goal of championing female filmmakers through community building and a shared love of the art. The festival spans all film genres, including narrative, live action, animation, documentary, and experimental films of all lengths.
The 2024 festival will feature films, including the U.S. premiere of “WaaPake” directed by Jules Koostachin, the Shirley Jo Finney Featured Filmmaker of the year, with the director in attendance. Other premiere screenings include “Last Dance,” directed by Delphine Lehericey, and “Preconceived,” directed by Sabrine Keane and Kate Dumke.
In addition to films from Iran, Brazil, Palestine, and many other countries, the lineup includes local representation. “Call of the Orcas” is the latest film from Olympic Peninsula-based director Jessica Plumb (“The Return of the River”). The short documentary explores the urgent effort to recover endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales of the Pacific Northwest, through the eyes of one of their human champions, researcher Ken Balcomb.
The festival will also host a Script Studio on Sunday, April 28, where four short film scripts by women writers will be read by actors and critiqued by a panel of film professionals. This workshop is free of charge and open to the public.

Sherrie Kahn and Scott Henderson present “Just In Time,” a tuneful cabaret exploring songwriters who found inspiration in the concept of time, creating “pop hits” over the centuries. Sherrie is an accomplished and versatile singer, known for her operatic roles as well as her popular and cabaret performances. Sherrie and Scott have selected an intriguing repertoire, including classic songs like Yesterday, Night and Day, As Time Goes By, What Did I Have I Don’t Have Now? and a dozen other timely favorites. Year Six of Scarecrow Academy brings an in-depth look at movies that examine the world of politics in the cinema. In nine weeks of free online conversations, we explore the various approaches that great filmmakers take to the political process. From comedy to tragedy, from satire to fable, with directors ranging from Frank Capra to Spike Lee, we’ll see how the movies have focused on the carnival that is the political process.

Known for her signature dry, witty sense of humor, Aparna will present an original stand-up routine and participate in a moderated discussion as the keynote speaker for Compass Health’s Building Communities of Hope Gala. The evening will also feature a raffle, silent auction, seated dinner, and remarks from other Compass Health representatives. The Corinthian Yacht Club of Bellingham invites you to its annual benefit dance for the Community Boating Center.
This year’s dance will be held on Saturday, April 27 at the Elks Lodge, 710 Samish Way in Bellingham. The doors open at 6:30 and the classic-rock band, The Walrus, will take the stage at 8 pm.
All proceeds, including from a paddle auction, will go to the boating center in its final push to finish its new Wheelhouse in Fairhaven and provide boating access and education to our Whatcom County community.
Get ready for a fun-filled night! Light refreshments will be provided by volunteers from the Corinthian Yacht Club, and beer, wine, alcoholic beverages and water will be available for purchase.

Through Old and New Maps” with works by Chuck Kitterman,
Hannah L. Rivers, David Syre and a selection of old maps from a
private collection.
“Charting the World” takes you on an enchanting journey through the
evolution of maps, from traditional cartography to modern digital
mapping technologies. It celebrates the rich history and diverse
forms of maps and map-inspired artworks while exploring their
enduring significance in shaping our understanding of the world

Come enjoy an exciting day of Roller Derby! The Subdued City Rollers Level 2 and Level 3 teams take on the Cherry Blossoms from Salem, Oregon in two Junior Roller Derby bouts at Whatcom Community College. Doors open at 2:00 PM.
Between the juniors’ bouts, The Bellingham Roller Betties All-Stars will battle it out in a sanctioned game against Coyote Country Roller Derby’s Palouse River Rollers.
Don’t miss out on the excitement as these teams leave it all on the track! We have concessions, a food truck, and a beer garden.
3pm: Subdued City Rollers vs Cherry Blossoms, Level 2 Juniors positional play
5pm: Bellingham Roller Betties All-Stars vs Coyote Country’s Palouse River Rollers
7pm: Subdued City Rollers vs Cherry Blossoms, Level 3 Juniors full-contact

The Subdued City Rollers are an all-gender, all-inclusive league of skaters ages 5-18 (and still in high school). There are three levels: level one (new skaters), level two (no contact, positional play), and level three (full contact). No skating experience is needed to join our league. Come check them out and meet your local junior roller derby skaters.
