The CASCADIA International Women’s Film Festival is thrilled to announce its seventh annual event, celebrating exceptional films directed by women from around the world. The festival will take place in Bellingham, WA, from April 25-28, 2024, with an online festival following from May 2-11, 2024.
Since its inception in 2017, CASCADIA has presented the films of over 220 women directors, one of the few festivals in the U.S. dedicated to the goal of championing female filmmakers through community building and a shared love of the art. The festival spans all film genres, including narrative, live action, animation, documentary, and experimental films of all lengths.
The 2024 festival will feature films, including the U.S. premiere of “WaaPake” directed by Jules Koostachin, the Shirley Jo Finney Featured Filmmaker of the year, with the director in attendance. Other premiere screenings include “Last Dance,” directed by Delphine Lehericey, and “Preconceived,” directed by Sabrine Keane and Kate Dumke.
In addition to films from Iran, Brazil, Palestine, and many other countries, the lineup includes local representation. “Call of the Orcas” is the latest film from Olympic Peninsula-based director Jessica Plumb (“The Return of the River”). The short documentary explores the urgent effort to recover endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales of the Pacific Northwest, through the eyes of one of their human champions, researcher Ken Balcomb.
The festival will also host a Script Studio on Sunday, April 28, where four short film scripts by women writers will be read by actors and critiqued by a panel of film professionals. This workshop is free of charge and open to the public.
CASCADIA is committed to changing the landscape of the film industry by offering a venue and a support system for women to tell their stories through the medium of film. By showcasing quality work by women directors, CASCADIA provides an important forum for the work of women directors to be seen and their voices heard.
The Unimaginable Journey of Peter Ertel, Movie
The Lynden Community/Senior Center is proud to present Free of Charge, The Unimaginable Journey of Peter Ertel, a true story so bold, brave, and beautiful it will restore your faith that humanity can survive even the darkest days. Hilarious adventure awaits! Join our band of unlikely heroes as they are called upon by an audience member to embark on a true-to-life quest. Armed with d20’s, the audience will journey with our heroes through strange lands, navigate perils and pitfalls, bond over pints, and fight off dangerous foes. Will our heroes survive and complete their quest? That is up to the dice! This show is sponsored by our friends at Cosmic Games.

Sherrie Kahn and Scott Henderson present “Just In Time,” a tuneful cabaret exploring songwriters who found inspiration in the concept of time, creating “pop hits” over the centuries. Sherrie is an accomplished and versatile singer, known for her operatic roles as well as her popular and cabaret performances. Sherrie and Scott have selected an intriguing repertoire, including classic songs like Yesterday, Night and Day, As Time Goes By, What Did I Have I Don’t Have Now? and a dozen other timely favorites. She even races with the clock in the Minute Waltz!
This show is a benefit for The FireHouse Arts and Events Center, a community treasure in Bellingham.

Year Six of Scarecrow Academy brings an in-depth look at movies that examine the world of politics in the cinema. In nine weeks of free online conversations, we explore the various approaches that great filmmakers take to the political process. From comedy to tragedy, from satire to fable, with directors ranging from Frank Capra to Spike Lee, we’ll see how the movies have focused on the carnival that is the political process.
Hear from acclaimed comedian, mental health advocate, and author, Aparna Nancherla! Known for her signature dry, witty sense of humor, Aparna will present an original stand-up routine and participate in a moderated discussion as the keynote speaker for Compass Health’s Building Communities of Hope Gala. The evening will also feature a raffle, silent auction, seated dinner, and remarks from other Compass Health representatives. The Corinthian Yacht Club of Bellingham invites you to its annual benefit dance for the Community Boating Center.
This year’s dance will be held on Saturday, April 27 at the Elks Lodge, 710 Samish Way in Bellingham. The doors open at 6:30 and the classic-rock band, The Walrus, will take the stage at 8 pm.
All proceeds, including from a paddle auction, will go to the boating center in its final push to finish its new Wheelhouse in Fairhaven and provide boating access and education to our Whatcom County community.
Get ready for a fun-filled night! Light refreshments will be provided by volunteers from the Corinthian Yacht Club, and beer, wine, alcoholic beverages and water will be available for purchase.

Hollywood film director Catherine Hardwicke will be at Pickford Film Center in Bellingham, WA on April 27th to introduce, in-person, a one-night-only screening of her 2008 film, Twilight, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
Twilight (2008) is the first in a series of films adapted from the best-selling “Twilight Saga” book series written by Stephanie Meyer.

Serafima & the Shakedowns with Mae Powell
With a keen eye for life and love, Serafima sings about the experience of a modern day woman in all its sparkle and grit. Through reflective hyperbole and honest observation her lyrics dance their way to the front of your heart, and live in the back of your head. But every pot needs a holder and The Shakedowns know how to distribute the heat. The band brings a unique “un-americana” sound, electrifying classic elements of The Golden Age of Radio, honky tonk, and Russian folk. With an unbridled love for artists like the Grateful Dead and Loretta Lynn, Serafima & the Shakedowns bring a little sass to the country western world.
